Our Story

A Church Built on Faith, Community & Belonging

We are a unique community of diverse families and friends that takes pride in our differences and continues to be open to everyone seeking to learn more about God and how faith can change lives.


Nestled on a small hill off of Ridge Avenue, just west of Philadelphia in Lafayette Hill, PA, Messiah's story began in March 1952, when the original 4½ acre property was purchased — its Victorian mansion becoming our first worship site. Wesley Hall, our present sanctuary, broke ground in 1954 and was completed the following year, and the church took the name Messiah in 1957.

Pastor J brings 30+ years of ministry experience, a native of Philadelphia with a passion for preaching, teaching, and youth ministry. He and his wife, Dr. Charnita Johnson, have two grown children and have called Messiah home since July 2023.

Minister Kimberly Charleston
Christ Servant Minister serving the Women's and Healthcare Ministries. With over 30 years in healthcare, Kim brings a heart of compassion to all she encounters.
Mary Basmajian
Mary Basmajian
Administrative Assistant at Messiah since 2007. Mary has had the joy of watching this congregation grow over the years, and being part of the Messiah family brings her great joy.
Minister Brenda Roberson
Minister Brenda Roberson
A devoted servant with a special heart for women's ministry, small groups, and Bible study. Brenda holds a Master of Divinity from Palmer Theological Seminary and is known for her warmth, authenticity, and passion for helping others grow in their relationship with Christ.
Ransford Addae
Ransford Addae
Ransford Kwabena Addae is a Ghanaian collaborative pianist and music educator currently pursuing an M.S.Ed. in Higher Education at the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a Master of Music in Collaborative Piano from the University of Mississippi and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from the University of Education, Winneba. Ransford has collaborated with choirs, vocalists, and instrumentalists in both Ghana and the United States and is passionate about music ministry, education, and developing the next generation of musicians.

Kristen
As a lifelong member of Messiah UMC, Kristen has always found joy in worshiping God through music. She is passionate about helping others connect with God through meaningful worship and considers it a privilege to serve as a worship leader. What she loves most about Messiah is its diverse congregation and welcoming atmosphere, where everyone is invited to belong and grow in faith.
